Former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings Dies at 77 After Short Illness


The nation is in mourning following the passing of former First Lady of Ghana, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, who died on 23 October 2025 at the Ridge Hospital in Accra. She was 77. 


Life & Legacy


Born on 17 November 1948 in Cape Coast, Mrs. Agyeman-Rawlings served as First Lady of Ghana during her husband, former President Jerry John Rawlings’s tenure—from 4 June 1979 to 24 September 1979, and again from 31 December 1981 to 7 January 2001. 


During her time as First Lady, she led the formidable 31 December Women’s Movement, which became one of Ghana’s most recognised grassroots women-empowerment organisations. 


Final Illness & Passing


Though details of her illness have not been fully disclosed publicly, reports state that she had been unwell and had been under close medical supervision at Ridge Hospital in Accra. 


She passed away after a short illness.
