Uganda’s Donald Rukare Elected First African President of Commonwealth Sport

At the 2025 General Assembly held in Glasgow, Dr. Donald Rukare — a veteran sports administrator, lawyer, and human-rights advocate — was unanimously elected President of Commonwealth Sport (CS), formerly known as the Commonwealth Games Federation.

Rukare becomes the first African ever to lead the 74-member Commonwealth sports movement, marking a historic milestone for African representation in global sports leadership.

In his acceptance speech, Rukare pledged to put athletes first, roll out his “Games Reset” plan to make hosting the Games more accessible for diverse nations, expand inclusive programmes for youth and under-resourced communities, and strengthen support for national Commonwealth Games associations across the globe.

Rukare’s election comes ahead of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games and sets the stage for planning the landmark 2030 Centenary Games in Amdavad, India — signaling ambitions for fresh leadership, inclusivity, and renewed vigor across the sport’s global family.
